You can spend it in less than a week even at a mediocre hotel like Kempinski Munich. They have a €23000 suite, but that’s the advance purchase rate. If I understand correctly, to redeem D$, you’d have to book a rate that doesn’t have an advance payment requirement, so you’d have to book the €29000 rate on that suite. 🤯
One thing I learned for sure with this exercise is what terrible value some of these Mandarin Oriental level hotels are in Europe. As I said, you wouldn’t be able to redeem the D$200,000 in Asia because you would have to pay taxes/service charges out of pocket, so would essentially be stuck redeeming in Paris, London, Rome, the Alps — places where taxes/fees are low or included in the base rate. All between October and March, which is of course not the favorable time to visit unless you go on ski trips. But the point is that these top luxury hotels usually have rooms starting in the range of $1000-1500. Some of those are literally shoebox sized, 17-20 m² in Paris and London. Even 35 m² junior suites often run $3000. And some of the top suites can easily set you back $6000-$15000, and there are some that run $30000. And often these are not giant palace like things, but 60 to 80 m² designed or previously inhabited by a famous person, with a small terrace that has an Eiffel Tower view. I’ve never kept track of what I pay versus regular rates using points or BRG, and the value of upgrades/club/breakfast, but I probably get $50000 worth of “value” for every $10000 spent with Hyatt/IHG/Marriott.
