I recall many years ago I told the check in agent that I would only check through to HKG instead of the final destination, and there was no issue.
Overnight transit will allow bag pick up.

Counter argument - I checked in CX HKG for HKG-(CX)NRT-(JL)JFK last year, one single ticket. NRT was an overnight.
CX F desk proactively asked can they not check me in for NRT-JFK even though I could have insisted on it, because they don't want to be on the hook for my Covid paperwork (flying from China incl HK to US at that time still needed a PCR).

Since I was overnighting at NRT capsule and had access to F check in in NRT (they probbaly want to see all my docs and paperwork again anyway) I said check me in to NRT alone.

CX PVG is getting quite notorious for being tough BTW PVG: CX denied boarding to a passenger due to a 4kg excess in duty-free hand luggage

Overnight transit?
