Overnight transit will allow bag pick up.
Counter argument - I checked in CX HKG for HKG-(CX)NRT-(JL)JFK last year, one single ticket. NRT was an overnight.
CX F desk proactively asked can they
not check me in for NRT-JFK even though I could have insisted on it, because they don't want to be on the hook for my Covid paperwork (flying from China incl HK to US at that time still needed a PCR).
Since I was overnighting at NRT capsule and had access to F check in in NRT (they probbaly want to see all my docs and paperwork again anyway) I said check me in to NRT alone.
CX PVG is getting quite notorious for being tough BTW
