Thanks for the response. I should have mentioned that this is all on a United Award ticket and the airlines do have an interline agreement. However I have been getting canned responses from United about the transit (please follow signs for the transit area etc when I see that the airport does not have one). That is why I was looking for some folks who have the ground experience.
