There is definitely inconsistency among gate agents and more training would be helpful. Some GAs are great and follow the procedure as-written. But the ones who don't just create worse problems. I've even heard reports of pax with gate-upgrades to FC being denied Zone 1 boarding because of the known DL IT issue of the electronic BP not updating the boarding zone following such upgrades.
I got upgraded yesterday on a flight originating in SLC and while BP on my phone updated my seat to FC, it didn’t update my zone from 2 to 1. I boarded in the middle of the zone 1 pack, an updated paper slip with new seat assignment printed out after my zone 2 pass was scanned, agent said the usual thanks for being a loyal DL customer, no problems.
