You might as well endure the flight in economy if you're not going to arrive refreshed from your J/F flight.
I've seen this kind of comment a few times on this forum. There are multiple reasons why someone might prefer an overnight layover in lounges/airport than a hotel. Maybe the overnight connection is short and they wouldn't get proper sleep either way (not in OP's case but happened to me many times). Maybe they want to maximize the benefits of flying F/J. Maybe the lounge is nicer than a $100 hotel. For me it's all of the above.
As for arriving refreshed, people sacrifice sleep all the time on premium cabin to enjoy the service/drink/food/movies. Besides, OP can rest on the connecting flight if needed. I find it absurd to compare cramming in Y for extended time with flying J, resting in world-class lounges, followed by more resting in the airport (fully stretched out).
It's no more amazing than someone prioritizing an inferior destination just b/c it has specific chain hotels, or choosing a boring chain hotel when there are nicer boutique hotels for half the price, or any number of seemingly irrational decisions miles-and-points geeks make as part of the hobby. Different strokes for different folks.
