Affidavit vs. Will?

Reading this and other threads, it appears that what's required here is a copy of the death certificate, along with an affidavit. What does one typically need to say in the affidavit?

Context...a friend's son has died, he had a substantial number of AAdvantage miles, but was also young and didn't have a will. Friend is wondering if AA will transfer those miles to one of the parents, even though there isn't explicit direction in the deceased will or other estate planning (which didn't exist).

Is this in the realm of possibility, or is it more likely that AA will just say "sorry" and wipe the account if the deceased did not provide any direction on their estate?
