Back in the early 2000s when I used to go to Roppongi, the streets were very sketchy indeed. However those were the heydays of kakutougi in Japan, so being in a group of professionals fighters who were on national TV opened all the doors and kept the Nigerian touts away.
Looking back, I think a big part of those adventures was just navigating such a wild place in a time before mobile internet, Google maps and real-time translation.
