I'm not defending the crew, as I was not operating this flight, however turbulence can feel more intense in the rearmost rows of an aircraft, including the 757, because it's farther away from the center of gravity. The yaw damper, which is located in the tail of the aircraft, can also make turbulence feel worse in the back because it prevents the aircraft from yawing (turning to the side) due to winds. This can cause rapid changes of direction the tail is pointing.

My brother who is an AA A320 pilot said the excuse was probably used because the Delta 757s are worn out....
