As the esteemed CWS has advised, BA are highly, highly unlikely to ever realise that a cabin bag is 1 inch bigger in any dimension. I’d say as much as a negligible chance. I would have zero concerns doing what you propose.
No, no! You and I were of one mind! Having seen bags checked on the continent by non-BA airlines for being oh so slightly overweight or size, I wanted to not make assumptions. Since 99% of my travel is domestic, it's important for me to check with everyone else about the reality.
