You'll need to enter Canada to claim and re-check your luggage, then. It's tight but do-able even for the AA flight, but depends on how busy CBSA is, and that can vary. If AA is your preference I think you'll want to have a backup plan in your pocket.

The good news is it's a medium-sized airport and not a long (distance-wise) connection. The bad news is you're making it complicated.
