Many thanks for all your helpful and constructive suggestions. You have given me plenty of food for thought. As most of what we are doing this year is Europe short haul I think our best approach is just go economy (as we would normally do). We can then put the money towards a bigger, better USA trip in April/may next year, and with a bit of this should get us most of the way to Silver for the best part of two years.
