I almost always travel in J, mainly long-haul but some short-hauls, on a mix of BA, Iberia and American. I always buy all my flights with Avios as I like the flexibility, and do everything possible to obtain as many Avios as I can through non-flying. So the only perk that I don't get is free seat selection and if I did an economy sector bags, priority check-in, boarding and lounge access. And I thought that wouldn't be an issue, but I've now decided to go on a Tier Point Run which has morphed into quite a nice holiday. The flights and car rental came in at £2,500 for two of us and that's enough to get us to Silver. The reason is that I'm spending a lot of money on seats - I spent £700 on seats for a batch of flights in the summer alone, and also we can hop across from SDQ to MIA in Y for buttons on American, but then are hit with queues for economy check-in, extra bag fees and not being able to pick a seat, and in addition American would allow us to use the First class lounge in MIA if we had Silver. And doing the flights now means I have the status until April 2026 so pretty much two years. All in all I think it's worth it, but you have to work out your flying pattern and work out if it really does work for you or not.
