Then a ROP Gold upgrade certificate is only valid for the member, and not for say a spouse. It requires a purchase of a mid-fare economy ticket and needs discount business class to be available. There are also taxes and booking fees. Once booked, there is a change fee. I have found GUP certificates difficult to use. They always require a phone call to Thai customer service, but availability can be checked on-line. Good luck. (I am also a former UA 1K member.)

I agree that upgrades with GUP/PUP needs a higher economy fare. However I have not found it difficult to use them, as I did this dozens of times. Travel agency can do it in opposite for example to M&M, where I have to do it myself by calling their customer service (as they do not authorize travel agency)
