Quite safe? Relative to what? Definitely safer than other parts of the city. But as someone who is obviously non-African I would not feel comfortable walking around town, even more so at night.

Which ones? Africa is not monolithic. One suggestion would be to carry cash, the banking system in some countries is disconnected. For example I could not use my credit cards to buy dinner at a nice restaurant in Luanda. Republic of Congo will fine you if you caught at the border entering with plastic bags. Every country and region has its pluses and minuses.
