I am becoming exasperated by this line of reply - despite agreeing with many of your points on other threads. To extend this logic shows it's fallacy. Imagine every time you book a connecting flight to your region, you arrive at the airport and they offer you a bus or a refund? This is what you are advocating! If I land in LAX on my way to LAS, and given a bus in place of a flight - then i'm going to be pretty peeved - and I would want, and expect UA to give me a damn big bit of compensation.
This is a case of a corporation offering a lower product and not compensating - when you book the flight, you are not doing so with half an eye that it might be a bus, and you are 'ok with that'.
