Another vote for San Diego.

The San Diego Zoo is fantastic.

They also in the same area to the zoo have wonderful aviation museum.

Then in the harbor is the USS Midway museum which is also a very wonderful attraction.

Great food and drink in the San Diego area.

From there it is not a long drive to LA and the attractions mentioned above, so I would think your family would find this an exciting replacement for Japan.
