Funnily enough one place I was looking at was San Diego and then flying home from LAX and maybe doing Super Mario World at Universal (because that is a disappointment of the 6 year old on cancelling Japan).
Was actually going to mention San Diego as well. It's a lovely place. Also Petco Park for the baseball is quite central.
Also appreciate being gutted about Japan but the weather there in August can be oppressive.
Southern California if on the beach is much more pleasant.
