The closest I've come to this is sitting next to someone on the prior flight, having a nice chat, and learning that the seatmate is also connecting, so I once invited someone to join me in the lounge for the connection. So, random? No, someone who was assigned a seat next to me, and stranger? Not by the time we entered the lounge.
