Should I ask for more than just refund of points for return flight canceled by UA?
Hi,
I am looking for opinions on if I should ask UA for any additional compensation for the situation below. Sorry it is so long but I’m not sure what details are important. TLDR is United canceled my point redemption flight and wouldn’t rebook me within a week of original travel.
I booked on United using MP points (around 90k pts total) with an original itinerary of DEN > IAD > AMM on United and return April 15 AMM > FRA > DEN operated by Lufthansa. Arrived in Amman with no problem. Around April 12/13 Lufthansa notified me that there would be a delay AMM to FRA and I would now have an overnight layover and return one day late. I contacted UA and they moved me to the AMM > IAD > DEN flight on April 15. Overnight on April 13 Iran launched missiles toward Israel and Jordan shut down airspace for around 10 hours. United, like all other US and Europe based airlines, did not resume flights when the airspace was reopened on April 14 and canceled my flight. They told me that since I booked with points they could not/would not rebook me on any other airline but could possibly rebook me on April 27. They also notified me that I wasn’t eligible for any type of voucher (food or lodging) because the cancelation was due to unrest and safety issues. Multiple calls, chats, and text messages later, on April 17 they offered to rebook me on an Air Austria flight scheduled on April 19 and I accepted the change. But when I looked at the Amman airport data, Air Austria had not resumed flights in or out of Amman. However, Egypt Air was operating multiple flights per day and is a Star Alliance partner – United would not book me on Egypt Air. I used 88k MileagePlus points and booked my own flight through United’s app, flying on Egypt Air and Lufthansa departing April 18 – AMM > CAI> MUC > DEN. United notified me that I had two conflicting reservations, so I canceled the Austria Air flight – that flight was also eventually cancelled by Air Austria. United refunded me aprox half of my original points (45k ish).
Do you think I am due any other compensation – I ended up spending aprox 40k extra miles to get home? I also used my AmEx Plat to pay the taxes and am considering filing a trip interruption claim but doubt I would be awarded much since I used points to re-book. Cash prices were around $4k and I didn’t want to risk spending that and not being reimbursed.
