That's my thought, as well. From my experience flying AA, agents at the airport are going to be much more likely to bend the rules than an agent over the phone.
Rules in the US are very different from Europe, yes they are much more willing to allow you to change flights, different market dynamics than in europe
If your ticket is a simple mad lhr then economy basic no free same say change, economy plus does have same day change, availble from midnight on the day of the flight. Which did you buy?
