I'm not opposed to a positioning flight - that can be done quite easily. I guess I was being blinded by the benefits with OW where I can select my seat for free (BA/AY/QR) and double tier points rather than *A where the fees to pick good seats are quite expensive.

I guess I was just thinking about the length of the flight with BA 12 hours to SIN then another 8 to SYD - quite a painful experience. Last time we visited SYD it was J and F - on reward flights too, but that was about 10 years ago
I'm not going to dress it up. Australia in Y is painful. But if you have to do one way in Y the westbound is the one to do. Breaking it up in SIN can mean that all the flights coming back are daytime flights. With that said, it's not actually much less painful in W. W is not a massive jump in comfort. If you have the choice between both ways in W or one each in J and Y, I would do the eastbound overnighters in J. Then Y back with a break in SIN.

Out in J and back in Y was coming in at 12k GBP. (But that was from INV so less taxes.)
So about £3k per ticket. You can get J both ways from London on the Chinese carriers for that.
