I was just down in the US, and had to travel from ATL to CLT last minute, about a 4 hour drive. DL and AA both operate the route and both wanted $500USD each way. It's not just AC and WS doing this, it's standard practice.
Both are hubs, neither with an organic reason to visit if you don't work for a bank.
