This is 100% correct, and AA is totally missing the boat on this, both for a premium experience and just reasonable pricing of nonstop flights. It’s like AA believes that EWR is not a reasonable alternative for like 70% of PHL o/d traffic.

I would assume they have done some internal analysis and determined the sustained higher prices outweigh any increase in volume.
Same holds true for CLT. Back when AA was US, when I used to fly CLT-SEA, it was cheaper to drive an 1.5 hours to GSO, fly GSO-CLT-SEA RT in first than CLT-SEA coach. (I would always skip the CLT-GSO on the tail end.)
If you can make an extra $200 (?) in economy per ticket by gouging PHL folks vs. competing against EWR, it could make financial sense. I would guess folks in EWR complain about UA international pricing out of EWR.
