Booked into a King ocean view with plunge pool. The pool is not heated and in the intense heat and humidity it was such a bliss. Lots of macaws flying around. At night there were fireflies in the trees by the patio.

Only a lowly Gold status, so had to buy my breakfast. It was not expensive and curiously enough the menu prices are inclusive of tax and service charge, so what you see is what you pay. Breakfast items vary between $8-12, for dinner expect to pay $20-35 per main dish. There is only one option for breakfast and dinner, while lunch can be served by the beach as well. Not expensive and pretty decent quality, but after a couple days gets a bit boring. I liked how tender the fish was cooked for dinner.

There is a small local restaurant a short hike away - you can request a golf cart to give you a ride there and back. Friendly owner and pleasant ambiance but I was not impressed with the food. The whole fish we ordered was way overcooked and dry.

A mixology class and a cooking class are offered complementary. For mixology you make and drink 2 different cocktails. Yep, 2 free drinks each, enjoyed on the beach. You pour your own spirits, so be as generous as you like.

For cooking class, we were told it would be a variety of dishes, but in the end we were just shown how to make gallo pinto, and served the result with some fresh cheese. Too bad this runs at the same time as mixology, so you can not do one and then the other 😂. In retrospect, I should have booked the mixology for both afternoons.

There were thunderstorms over the ocean at night, so it was very cool watching the lighting strikes from the safe and dry land.

The whole vibe is chill and secluded. There is not much to do around, so honestly, if they don’t expand their food offering, it’s hard to recommend more than a couple of days. For comparison, we also spent a couple of nights in Andaz Papagayo, and granted, it’s a very different price point, but the food offerings there were so much more numerous and interesting.

The decor is quite tired, but I’m told a redesign is already in progress in some of the rooms. Was offered to check that out, but just didn’t work out.

Not the kind of place I’d get too out of my way to visit, but it’s very pleasant to break up a road trip.
Thanks for posting the review! I’m planning on heading down there with my wife in a month. We were debating the JW vs Mangroove (now full) vs Punta Islita. I was leaning towards Punta Islita for a more remote, “true Costa Rica” vibe, and hoping to do some hikes and kayaking while the wife is poolside.

Was the nearby restaurant Don Ramiro? Did you make reservations or have the concierge arrange?

I’m tempted by the cocktail class and some of the other free activities - would you recommend tipping the staff after these? I never know!

lastly - you mentioned a road trip. We’ll probably rent a car. I’ve been doing a lot of research on this, and will rent a small 4x4 SUV through National in Liberia, and will see if I can get a letter from Chase to cover part of the insurance (not the SLI). Did you drive through any spots near Punta Islita that you’d recommend?

thanks again for the intel! I hope you’re having a wonderful trip.
