I think you're right. There may be some kind of electronic glitch (at least concerning JFK). Yesterday, I spoke with AF customer service and for 20 minutes try as she might she couldn't understand why I couldn't preorder. So she took my number and said she would call me back in a few minutes. Didn't happen. Also, I got a notification on the AF app that there will be no online check in and go to the airport kiosk.
Edit: Spoke to customer service this afternoon. There will be no preordering for this flight, reason unknown. Also, I was issued a check-in confirmation online, but not a boarding pass (must check-in at kiosk). However, got the boarding passes for my two travel companions. As long as the flight takes off as scheduled, I'm good.
In their website it says pre-ordering available except for certain flights including those departing LAX.
