With all due respect, you are not comparing like-for-like: to get the cheapest T-fares you need to book a couple of months out.
So, for the sake of argument, a couple dummy bookings for 1 week in March at the lowest WT+ T fare shown in FE:
LHR-JFK 4th-11th March 2003
£680.20
CHARGES FOR CHANGES AND CANCELLATIONS
CANCELLATIONS ANY TIME TICKET IS NON-REFUNDABLE. CHANGES ANY TIME CHANGES NOT PERMITTED.
JFK-LHR 3rd-10th March 2003
$738.70
CHARGES FOR CHANGES AND CANCELLATIONS
CANCELLATIONS BEFORE DEPARTURE CHARGE USD 200.00 FOR CANCEL/REFUND.
CHANGES TO FLIGHT/S OTHER THAN THE OUTBOUND TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT <sniped: $200 plus any fare difference>
These are the lowest published (specials aside) T-class ex-UK and ex-US resepctively. Not only is the US fare 2/3 the price of the UK one, the cancellation/change conditions are much more lenient. This shows not only on these WT+ fares but on many discount-economy tickets too (not that any of us every purchase them of course

)

P.S. glad everything worked out for you
