I've done this a few times. Just remember that cancelling the return online does not automatically trigger a refund on the taxes/fess, or miles; whereas it does for an unused award ticket. You have to call in afterwards and instruct them to do it. I would not let those miles go to waste just to avoid a little effort on my end. And I would definitely not "surrender" those miles (or cash) to AA.
