While this will not answer the OP's question for next week's flight, I note that United Airlines -- which also flies LHR-SFO nonstop -- does not charge for advance seat selection, unless one has booked a "Basic Economy" fare. But it's possible that BA's regular Economy fare was lower than UA's.
