No denying however that it is half of the problem. The other being that physically demanding work, often at unsocial hours for what is probably not very good money, is probably not top of people's lists of things they want to do. The pandemic and particularly lockdown and time spent at home has almost certainly caused people to reassess their working priorities, particularly the times that they work at.
So you might have two options, both of which pay the same amount of money:
1: Work for an airline. Your shift starts at 4.30am, you have to arrive at least 30 minutes before you start, get a bus from the car park and then queue to clear security. Then you factor in your commute and time to get ready etc. Both ways.
2: You work for, say, Tesco. You start at 7.30 and you arrive at 7.15, park the car and walk into work.
At a basic level that is the sort of choice we are looking at. If you add in that during the pandemic BA fired about 25% of its workforce (some of them with a lot of experience) despite having the furlough facility and they went off and found out that there were better jobs out there then you are left with the hospital pass that Mr Doyle received.
