Question Problems with SLIP over Iridium link

A friend is in Africa with an Iridium phone. He's trying to use the phone's modem to set up a SLIP link and upload a few pictures and small files. Before he left we tested this in the US with the phone and it worked fine. From Africa it appears that the ping time is just too long and the signal drops out at times. The dropout problems make even voice communications difficult. Does anyone have any suggestions? He's got an Apollo SLIP driver running on Win2k. Are there any Windows parameters that can be used to extend the packet timeout?
