I don't have the choice of direct flights so for me it's a short and a long flight or two mid-hauls via the Middle East. The ME has been my first choice for years but that got stymied during Covid so did a couple via HEL and more recently via CDG and they have reinforced my belief that two flights of ~ 7 hours each are much preferable to a 1 or 2 hour flight followed by a 10 or 12 hour flight. Even if someone started a direct route I reckon I would still go with the split journey.
Can you elaborate? Your order of preference is the exact opposite of what I typically hear (direct > long haul + short haul > 2 'mid-haul' flights). IMO, if they all have to involve a late evening/midnight departure, 2 mid-haul flights is least conducive to sleep compared to long haul/direct.
