I think that is the issue for AA - and maybe why they slowed PHL, hoping for CLT to expand enough. But they cannot wait for CLT to get enough capacity.
(CLT is getting 10 more gates this year + another runway in 2027. But that is not enough for AA as the airport is already over max.)
AA also had the NEA with B6, which helped boost their JFK relevance again, rendering PHL as less important. COVID + NEA and AA had zero impetus to resume work.
