I myself in other countries and airlines have had agents tell me that "We have booked you on another flight as you cannot make your connection", and I have ignored them, gotten to the gate with more than 45 minutes left, and gotten them to get me back on the flight (not always so easy) and I have had situations where the reason was obvious, that they had oversold the flight, and obviously figured that there was no way I could make it (which I surely would not have if I waited a few minutes with the agents at the arrival gate.
