For a TPAC flight in J, you'd pay about 15k extra AC miles for the cancellation option. However, that's still far cheaper, even with the extra miles, than booking with UA miles.

I agree with that. If you mainly redeem miles for UA flights, then you're pretty much stuck with the UA program for the time being. Personally, I have enough UA miles in my account that I can't figure out what to do with them (UA domestic flights aren't my favorite redemptions).
