I'm no expert on Aeroplan, but from what I've seen the extra cost for a Latitude award kills any points savings compared to UA. AC also charges much higher fees than UA. Finally, UA is now severely limiting its award releases to partners, such that AC is likely not going to be a viable option for booking UA flights.

Is AC a viable option for booking *A awards? Yes, absolutely, but there are significant drawbacks, particularly for those who desire flexibility in their bookings.
