As long as CX has a monopoly on NYC-HKG (a route that is great for connections in addition to O&D), it makes sense for them to milk it for all its worth, even if doing so means leaving a few West Coast slots on the table. Interestingly, the unions haven't been moaning about this (unless I've missed it), but are focused on the far less impactful PVG and CAN flights from NY.
