For some items, we may accept paying a higher price for convenience. But I agree that with air travel (and hotels) the consumer should always check alternate channels before buying through any third party. In particular, you should always check what it costs to buy direct from the carrier before buying through an agent.
AMEX makes no "low fare guaranty" so I don't really see a problem with the practice complained of here. It is a caveat emptor world out there.

It's worth checking hotel prices. For an upcoming Seattle trip, FHR rates are the same as the lowest rates offered by several properties (LXR, Fairmont, Lotte) and the FHR rate includes breakfast, late checkout, a $100 credit, and a possible upgrade.
