I wanted to know the answer to this too, and also the answer to what happens if you put in two bids — one for Economy to Premium, and one for Economy to Business.
I did that and neither bid worked, but nor was I contacted to see if I wanted to increase the bid.
Also, does checking in online early affect the likelihood of an upgrade bid then clearing later and moving you to a higher cabin?
