I understand this example pushes the envelope.
Data point.PY fare, E-upgraded, to J on YYZ-YVR connecting to a Dash-8 all Y flight YVR-YYJ No lounge access in YVR even though I had a same day boarding pass with lounge access printed on the boarding card.
Last time it was a paid J fare YYZ-YVR- (Y dash8) YYJ I did have lounge access. So even if the departing flight is in Y, if your ticket was a purchased/miles J ticket you do get lounge access on the Y departing segment. But if it is a Y/PY fare upgraded, you do not get lounge access on an ALL ECONOMY Jazz Dash-8 departing segment. I would also assume that would apply to a Y/PY ticket that was upgraded YVR-YYZ J then upgrade not clear YYZ-YUL segment you would not.
My brain is fuzzy today, not sure how to word this better but a departing Y segment WILL get lounge access if the ticket is a J ticket. But departing Y segment NO lounge access if upgraded ticket.
