Just to update this, the points were reversed on May 3 and my card was recharged for the amount of those flights. The flights had been scheduled for April 4 but Delta canceled and refunded the flights resulting in a cash credit on my account which was used towards ongoing purchases. So it seems that Amex may be tamping down on this but it does take some time for the process to play out.
