In China the problem is that people are for profit globalists. They book a room of they can sell a room online. That globalist checks in but then gives the room to his client who receives full globalist benefits.
So some hotels essentially have to deal w people whose full time job is being a globalist at a specific property and renting out rooms nightly.
Properties like the money/ revenue but also don't like have to give out full benefits all the time because of costs. For legit guests like me, it becomes harder to get benefits or benefits become watered down.
At properties where I'm a known and legit guests, the gms call for me and everyone knows I'm legit and treats me crazy well. But if I don't call in a favor etx, then it's a disaster as so many guests with globalist benefits check in.
This is especially problematic w Marriott as it is so much easier on China to get platinum status and there are soooo many hotels in a single city that is is easy to make a living doing this. For profit elites can tip front desk staff $10 a month to look the other way (salaries are often 300-400 USD).
Now, I just found out there's a urcove within walking distance of my home that's $58 USD a night. If I am ever near missing that 60 night mark, I'll just do mattress runs there. But I've been well over that my entire globalist time except one year when I did 10 nights at a hp to requalify.
Most of my status are at Park Hyatts where the breakfastsnl are $50 a night. So I've lucked out that I can requalify cheaply and easily and legitimately if need be.
I'm actually quite happy as I've been thinking of reducing my Hyatt stays to 40-50 nights a year and going free agent (I'm normally 90 Hyatt and 70 free agent a year). But I'm finding less value in hyatt except at specific properties so have been struggling on how to reduce my stays while maintaining globalist
