I’m just saying, that’s essentially what has happened — people are reporting prices that are 2-3x what they were when the last charts were introduced. When it was done in smaller chunks, people seemed less irritated. Personally, if I have to choose between prices that increase steadily year over year, or jump up every five years, I’ll take the latter. We essentially got four years of stability that was quite surprising.

They are not linked to price. And there is no reason to believe that inflation will decrease, because the 1.1¢ redemption rate you mentioned is something that’s made up and that they can change at any time.
While I'm in finance, I'll let Google's AI speak for me : "Price stability is an economic condition where the prices of goods and services remain relatively constant over a period of time. It's characterized by the absence of prolonged inflation or deflation, which can be disruptive to an economy. Price stability is important because it reduces uncertainty and anxiety for consumers and businesses, and it helps people make sound decisions about saving, borrowing, and investment." Over that period of stability to which you refer, many folks made what they thought were sound decisions about their spending, saving, borrowing, and investment (in MileagePlus). UA owes us all an apology (not that we'll get it) as they either (a) clearly mismanaged the program from an economic perspective and/or (b) have a complete disregard for doing what's right for its actual stakeholders (us).

We all have to balance work, personal obligations, children, old pets, etc., and thus with these types of unexpected devaluations (or price increases), overnight, all that planning and accumulating of miles is thrown out the window if the timing wasn't perfect. Just because they can, doesn't mean they should.
