I strongly urge people not to expect a white knight to ride in and save the MileagePlus program from five to ten years ago. Each passenger should be evaluating their purchasing decisions regularly — and people who don’t want to invest that kind of energy should stick to cash back or convertible currency cards, purchase the cheapest sensible flight, and forget about trying to accumulate frequent flyer miles except as a happy accident of normal travel patterns.

The airlines hold the cards here; all passengers can do is choose whether or not to play the game.
Once Kirby hired the former leader of Comcast, one of the most hated companies in America, to lead MP, it was clear the program was on a one way trip to disaster. I’ve been watching options for a few months and ended up transferring Amex points to BA for two JAL PY tickets at 50k each while UA wanted 200k each way for Polaris and not much less for its vastly inferior (compared to JAL) Premium Plus.

I honestly don’t know what to do with my MP balance any more because a single Asia redemption to Japan or Taiwan will empty out my account completely. I was holding the miles to use for BR upgrades but United’s catastrophe of a SAUA portal nixed that idea for now.
