Checking back in on this thread, I'm happy to note that my 50K Aeroplan miles duly credited on May 1st, so that took a couple of months.

An extra bag when flying Virgin is one apparent upside of *G with UA. Sadly too new to the forum to post a link.
I'm guessing that a bag is not one of the benefits of *G with AC, so it's a tossup between the 50K AP miles (with AC) and bags (with UA).
But it would be nice to know for sure.
I don't know the answer to this - I have not yet flown with VA using my new AC status. My partner (who did the promo at the same time as me) is flying them next week so he'll get to see how seamless (or otherwise) the lounge access is, but he won't be checking a bag so probably can't shed light on that. Given it's not mentioned on the website as a benefit I'd say it's relatively unlikely that extra bag is included. But I do think one major selling point for the AC/VA alliance is the ability to earn *A status miles from your domestic travel on VA.

Yes, I agree - at least from a purely status earning perspective. If you're also using it as your primary card due to the ability to earn *A miles which are transferrable across multiple carriers (you're not tied to Aeroplan), then you can make a bit more of a case for it... but it's still a stretch given that points earning drops to half after AUD 30K per year, which is particularly mean spirited.
