People may think it is easier to maintain a single RT PNR itinerary (keep track of one reference only), but fail to realise that should changes need to be made, there are quite a number of limitations for a RT itinerary - be it unflown or partially flown itinerary. Example i can think of is if one has flown one segment of the itinerary, and wishes to refund the other, this is not possible. Even change of date also requires offline assistance. However, if booked as 2 separate one ways, then clearly one is able to do whatever he wants with the other segment.
Yes, that's exactly why I always book one-way awards. If you ever need to make any changes to either leg it makes things a whole LOT easier. Plus as mentioned before the price in miles is the same regardless of whether you book a return or two singles.
