Yes, you can always split PNR and pay fare diff to upgrade (upfaring) passengers on separate reservation once split. Each person on a reservation has their own ticket number and the tickets can be changed independently of each other when they are no longer part of the same reservation. However, once split, there is no way to recombine tickets back on a single reservation.
