This is a misunderstanding of the distinction between good
s and services. More convenient trips are more expensive, because - to a greater or lesser extent - time is money to us all.
Not that I think anyone needs to feel guilt over skipping the final leg - just that those wishing for a more "rational" pricing structure probably aren't going to like the result, which would almost certainly be a reduction in services and an overall increase in prices.
