Firstly, if you're looking at a seat map, then you do not have any real information about how full the PE cabin might be. It could be the case that those seats are sold to people who do not wish to pay extra to choose their seat. If you want to know how many seats are actually available, post the flight number and date on the forum, and ask someone to check loads in ExpertFlyer for you.
As for the bidding process, it ought to be done at this point. The fixed price option usually shows up earlier than 72 hours out, but you might have a last chance shot at a cash upgrade at the airport.
