You can use the airport wifi if you need to get online. There are videos and explanations of the procedures on the following page:

If you want to use an automated lane at customs, you will need to visit a kiosk to scan the QR code and re-confirm your answers to the customs questionnaire. Then the kiosk will photograph your face for the facial recognition at the customs gate. It's very quick.
If you also complete a paper customs form on the plane, you will have the choice to go through the manned customs lanes if you see that the lines are shorter.
If you're running late you can change the Shinkansen reservation to a later train.
