Refundable means that you can get your money back for an unused ticket. It generally means that you can get money back for a partially-used ticket, after re-computing the cost to account for what you actually flew. It does not have any effect on how fares are combined together, though.

I only recommend refundable tickets if you think it’s likely you might not take the trip at all and if you wouldn’t otherwise have a use for the funds. If you’d be flying UA anyway, refundability is rarely worth paying for.
